Guilty Gear Strive Will Have Rollback Netcode On Release, Closed Beta Happening In April

Finally! Guilty Gear Strive certainly looks pretty awesome visually, but fans in the fighting game community have quite a lot of concerns based on the version Arc System Works was demoing at various events.

The concerns were the weird UI (not just the looks, but how certain gameplay important features are obfuscated), and the decision to maintain use of delay-based netcode.

Arc System Works has confirmed that in its call for sign-ups for an upcoming closed beta, the UI will be revised and will be seen in the beta. In addition, the release version of Guilty Gear Strive will use rollback netcode.

Delay-based netcode means that should two players playing online cannot get a decent connection, the game will basically lag itself, and that does not feel good.

Rollback netcode, when it works properly, will attempt to predict another player’s action should the connection drops, and when established again, would roll back to the other player’s proper inputs again.

While both netcodes will still be bad if you’re playing in poor connection, rollback netcode has been agreed by many in the FGC should be the standard choice. One popular solution to rollback netcode- GGPO- is now free to use. Even Fight Of Animals has rollback netcode.

So it’s good to see ArcSys listening to the many fan feedback and getting around to implement it.

However, the Closed Beta Test, happening on April 17th, 3AM UTC (11AM Malaysian Time, +8 GMT), will only use delay-based netcode, for some reason.

Servers for online testing open during these times, in Malaysian Time

  • April 18th, 11AM -3.50PM
  • April 18th,  3AM- 7.59AM
  • April 19th, 6PM- 10.59PM

You can also play against the AI when the servers are not open for open testing. The beta includes all seven revealed characters so far: Sol, Ky, May, Axl, Chip, Potemkin, and Faust.

You can register here for the closed beta here.

Guilty Gear Strive is coming out this year for the PS4.
