Developers IO Interactive announced that all levels from Hitman 2016 will be playable in Hitman 2. Those who owned Hitman 2016 will get access to these level for free in Hitman 2.
But it won’t stop there. Future Hitman games will also offer access to past levels, with new gameplay and graphical enhancements.
Speaking to Gamesindustry.biz, IO Interactive’s Sven Liebold has confirmed this will be the case.
“The community means a lot to us,” he said. “And I think it’s a very big step for the studio as well, because this essentially means that maybe there’s a Hitman 3, and a Hitman 4 as well. And this will all appear on the same timeline.
“Meaning that in a couple of years you may be able to play a game that goes to over 20 locations. And that’s super exciting for us.”
Liebold acknowledged that there were fans the loved the episodic release but also fans that are not. The decision to release Hitman 2 as a full product outright rather than a Season 2 as many expected before was all done by IO. “We wanted to break up the sequel chain a little,” he added. ” and it’s also important for us to serve our players instead of following this trendy bubble of games-as-a-service.”
Given that each map in this current iteration of Hitman is well-designed to be a sandbox of various murders, it’s good to see them continue to be reused in a good way. Post-launch content of Hitman 2016 only used the same six maps but remixed and rearranged for a new experience. So in this case, it’s totally cool if they resuse these levels for extra content.
