Australian indie devs Oppolyon Studios’s first game, Ascending Inferno, is out now on PC. This is being described as a “Foddian soccer platforming game” which is certainly something you don’t see, read or hear everyday.
“Foddian” here refers to the simple yet challenging and punishing mechanics that is at the core of the game’s gameplay loop, as popularised by Bennett Foddy’s game, Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy.
The football (soccer) aspect comes from the premise of Ascending Inferno. Dani isn’t going out of hell alone, and she needs to bring her dead brother Vincent along with her. And the only way to do bring her ball-shaped soul of a brother out is to kick, dribble and header it like a football.
Like a good Foddian (thank goodness it’s not called a Foddy-like) game, mistakes will see you fall down and lose progress, and Vincent will make you know what you did.
Players who love to challenge their perseverance (or downright masochists who love being punished) should check this out. There sure are plenty of platformers releasing in the last two months.
Ascending Inferno is out now on PC (Steam).
