Foamstars, Square Enix’s multiplayer shooter with bubbles and style, will become a free-to-play title beginning October 4, precisely at 10 AM JST (9 AM Malaysia Time, +8 GMT).
The game, launched back in February this year for PS4 and PS5, is a paid title though it was given for free as part of PS Plus Monthly games where subscribers can claim and play the game so long as they are an active subscriber.
With the change to free-to-play, Foamstars will not require a PS Plus subscription to play anymore.
Players who downloaded the game prior to this will be recieveing a Legacy Gift bundle which inlcudes the following items:
- 12 exclusive color-variant Bubble Beastie skins
- 1 exclusive Slide Board design
- 1 title: “Legacy”
Foamstars has been actively getting content in the past months post-release with new heroes and limited-time modes. It is currently in Season 7.
Paid multiplayer offerings have seen a downturn recently. Overwatch became free-to-play with the launch of its sequel, Exoprimal has ceased the release of new content, and the recently released Concord is having low player counts.
Helldivers 2 seems to be an exception among recently released paid multiplayer games, but that game belongs in the co-op-only multiplayer bucket, which remains an actractive purchase along the likes of GTFO, Deep Rock Galactic and more.
The transition into the free-to-play model should allow the game to attract new players to give this “party shooter” a go.
Foamstars goes free-to-play on October 4. The game is out now on PS4 and PS5.
