Fallout 3, Bethesda’s 2008 open-world RPG, and its first game of many using the Fallout IP, has gotten a much-needed update today.
Over on Steam, Fallout 3 Game Of The Year (the only version available for purchase on the store) has been updated to remove Games For Windows Live. As such, the game won’t install any files related to Games For Windows Live on launch.
The patch notes recommend players who have the game installed to uninstall and reinstall the game for it to be of effect.
Games For Windows Live was Microsoft’s back-end online gaming service. Think Xbox Live but for Windows Vista. The tech is now depreciated- you can just log into Xbox account on your PC these days- but it was notable for at least two things: the first botched attempt of cross-platform play and how annoyingly hard games with the service is to run on more modern versions of Windows. The Steam page for Fallout 3 has a warning about its potential incompatibility with Windows 7 and later OS versions.
The stripping of this unwanted, and depreciated service should make the game to have one less hoop to jump over to run on more modern devices.
On a related note, Fallout 3 is also 60% off, dropping down to RM15.20 in Malaysia, until October 27. If you always wanted to give the game that was billed at one time as “Oblivion with guns”, now’s a good time to pick it up.
