Cyberpunk 2077 Update Adds “Ray Tracing: Overdrive Mode” On PC

CD Projekt Red and Nvidia have teamed up to create a bonkers level of PC graphics setting in Cyberpunk 2077 only for the most high-end PCs.

The new setting, Ray Tracing: Overdrive Mode, is described as a “technology preview” where it uses full ray tracing effects. Or path tracing as it’s otherwise called. The “technology preview” label is there to let you know that “it’s not going to be perfect from the start and players might experience some issues”.

Ray Tracing: Overdrive Mode is only supported on Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Ti series and up, or starting at GeForce RTX 3090 (which can run at 1080p 30 fps).

There is an option to have path tracing on for screenshot-taking in Photo Mode, for graphics cards with at least 8GB of VRAM. Since it’s rendering one frame- a still one at that- any card with a big enough VRAM can take a look at how Overdrive Mode will look like. Screenshot-taking can take a while on PCs with less powerful CPU, or taking screenshots at higher resolution.

Ray Tracing: Overdrive Mode is a graphical preset, but you can also opt to just have Path Tracing on in the Ray Tracing options part of the Settings menu.

Path Tracing and Ray Tracing: Overdrive Mode are available as part of Update 1.62 for Cyberpunk 2077, available now on PC.
