Bigben Acquires Spiders As It Aims To Be The Leading “AA” Publisher
Not AAA, just AA
Bigben Interactive, the French-based publisher, has announced that it has acquired developers Spiders. These are the team that brought you RPGs such as Bound By Flame, Mars: War Logs, and Technomancer.
You may have heard these games being quite janky but decent enough. Spiders, which are also based in France, are working on Greedfall, another RPG this time set in 17th century Europe. The team also has its own in-house game engine, the Silk Engine.
This is quite a coup, considering Spiders have most of its games published under Focus Home Interactive. Greedfall is still scheduled to be published under Focus Home. The acquisition will see Spiders; top management remaining as-is, with CEO and co-founder Jehanne Rousseau retaining leadership.
This is one of the many series of investments Bigben is making to realise its plans for 2022, which it aims to be “one of the reference leaders in ‘AA’ video games.” The publisher has also bought Cyanide Studios, which makes way too many games including the new Blood Bowl: Death Zone and Pro Cycling Manager 2019, and Eko Software which recently released Warhammer: Chaosbane. They have also increased their investment on Kylotonn Racing, the folks behind the WRC games and that truck racing game.
Bigben’s output of games can be uneven in quality, but since they’ve set the bar to be just a AA games publisher, not AAA, it sounds like they know exactly what they are doing.
