At the Summer 2024 State Of Play broadcast, PlayStation Studios unveiled the next game from Team Asobi, the development team of the Astro Bot games. And their next game is titled Astro Bot.
Yes, just Astro Bot.
The creators of the PS VR game Astro Bot Rescue Mission and the PS5 pack-in game Astro’s Playroom finally got to make their own standalone 3D platformer.
The reveal trailer shows the many traversal and combat abilities Astro Bot posses, including the ability to ride on a DualSense-shaped plane (likely to be steered by tilting the controller just like how it’s presented in-game), and a launch-spec PS5-shaped ship.
Astro Bot can jump, hover (ala Mario’s F.L.U.D.D jet pack from Super Mario Sunshine) and unlock new abilities like a pair boxing gloves and fight giant bosses.
Astro Bot will feature over 50 different worlds.
The trailer also continues a tradition from Astro Bot Playroom by having characters from other PlayStation games making a cameo. In the trailer there was Astro Bot Nathan Drake from Uncharted, Astro Bot Wander from Shadow Of The Colossus, Astro Bot The Traveler from Journey, Astro Bot PaRappa The Rapper from PaRappa The Rapper and Astro Bot Kratos from God Of War, to name a few.
PlayStation’s early years was built on top of the success of 3D mascot platformers. And seeing a new 3D platformer with such jovial, E for Everything charm is such a breath of fresh air, and a nice reminder that video games can just be fun and playful.
Astro Bot releases on September 6 on PS5.
