ARMS Producer Shows Who’s Boss By Beating E3 Tournament Champion

ARMS, Nintendo’s new fighting game for the Switch was not released yet as of last week, but that hasn’t stopped people at E3 trying their luck in the ARMS Open Invitational. 8 players, 4 pro players selected by Nintendo and another 4 qualifying through the rounds on the E3 showfloor.

At the end of the day, Zerk, one of the contestants qualified through the floor emerged champion and held the honour of lifting the championship belt. But then the announcer pulled a surprise exhibition match and called in ARMS producer Kosuke Yabuki to challenge the winner.

While many may feel the fighting game seems to be a bit too simplistic, Mr. Yabuki’s performance may as well opened a few eyes on how ARMS can be at a higher level. In short, the champion got demolished in two straight games. Not dropping a single round. Despite Zerk’s effort to try and win by time out in several rounds, Mr. Yabuki managed to stage the right comebacks to come out on top.

Of course, since the game not being out yet, it’s safe to assume the developers should be good at their own game at this stage. But to see Mr. Yabuki performing that well shows that the game is still at its infancy and players have a long way to go to understand the depths, even if it looked a bit shallow at first glance.

It must have felt awkward walking away as the champion to the tournament after being beat down by the game’s producer in an exhibition match. Nevertheless, it serves as good entertainment, so props for both Zerk and Mr. Yabuki for the performance.
