Ancient Egypt Was Considered For The Setting Of The New God Of War

"I don't want a two 'Armaggeddon/Deep Impact' Egyptian mythology games."

The new God Of War, simply titled God Of War, is set to arrive sometime this year. As development comes to a close more info about the new direction of the series has been out there. One of which is how the new God Of War isn’t a reboot. It’s still the same Kratos, though aged, wearied and is now a dad. All the other world mythologies exist within the God Of War’s universe.

Speaking to Game Informer, Creative Director Corey Balrog explained that at one time, the development team were split between two different mythologies to explore. “Half the wanted one, half the team wanted the other,” he said. Balrog ultimately made the call to choose Norse mythology, where he made a document and explain why they should go for that rather than the other choice.

The other choice? Ancient Egypt.

“Assassin’s Creed Osiris will come out when we are gonna come out,” he continued, referring to a codename for what is now Assassin’s Creed Origins. “I don’t want a two ‘Armaggeddon/Deep Impact’ Egyptian mythology games.”

It was a good call, a number of games that were rather similar and released closely together suffered due to the overlap, though not necessarily true for all games which fall into this situation. But still, having Assassin’s Creed Origins and God Of War explore different themes and locales helped both games be more appealing and stand apart.

No release date yet for God Of War, though rumours suggest that it will March 22nd. In any case, prepare for a new adventure with Kratos and son sometime this year exclusively for the PS4.
