5 Million Players Have Played The Outer Worlds

It’s been about 4 years since Obsidian and Private Division launched The Outer Worlds. The sci-fi RPG famously marketed as being made by the makers of Fallout New Vegas has seen commercial success.

The Outer Worlds Twitter account announced that the game has since been played by 5 million players.

Fascinatingly, the promo images uses the phrase “5 million units sold through” while the text only mention 5 million players. Usually, sales milestones like this don’t use them interchangeably. The term “players” are used in place of “sales” for games that are offered on subscription services like Game Pass, which The Outer Worlds was available on there on day-1 (and likely forever, now that Obsidian is an Xbox first-party studio).

The Outer Worlds 2 was quickly announced soon after the first game launched, but Obsidian has since been quiet about the game, as it currently focuses on another first-person RPG Avowed.

The Outer Worlds is more Mass Effect than it is Starfield, but its witty writing and worldbuilding make this title worth playing, if you’re not part of the 5 million that had given it a go. Check out our review of the game here.

Since its original release on PS4, Xbox One and PC, the game has received a port to Switch, as well as next-gen versions for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
