Amazon Game Studio’s 4V4 MOBA sport game Breakaway has officially cancelled. Breakaway was one of the three new games in development by the company that owns Twitch, and was so far the most developed. Development was handled by Double Helix Games, which previously worked on the 2013 reboot of fighting game Killer Instinct.
“In spite of our efforts, we didn’t achieve the breakthrough that made the game what we all hoped it could be,” reads the statement on the game’s subreddit. “After a lot of soul searching, the team decided to focus on new ideas. As a result, Breakaway is no longer in active development.”
Breakway is a “mythical sports game”: part football, part character-based with skills ala MOBA and some building mechanics sprinkled in. It’s a hodgepodge of an idea, with a focus on competitive play and esports- the YouTube channel is filled with past broadcasts of matches.
The eventual cancellation may be the best way to go, considering recent trends have gone away from the class-based games to battle royales. Kotaku had reported that the game was supposedly cancelled back in October 2017.
