3D Audio On PS5 Only Works With Headphones On Launch, Virtual Surround Sound For TV Coming Later

One small, but potentially cool tech that the PS5 is pushing is 3D audio. The PS5 has its own proprietary Tempest 3D AudioTech that simulates surround sound- so you can pinpoint where exactly the sound comes from in relation to you which can be both immersive and improve gameplay experience.

On the PlayStation Blog, it has been confirmed that on launch, you can experience 3D audio via headphones. This can be either Sony’s own Pulse 3D wireless headset, or any headphone that can be plugged via USD or a 3.5mm jack from the controller.

However, 3D audio won’t be available through speakers on TV at launch. Virtual surround sound will be added to the PS5 “in the future”.

PlayStation also has shared a short list of games that has confirmed to utilise 3D audio. They are:

  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
  • Astro’s Playroom
  • Gran Turismo 7
  • Returnal
  • Destruction AllStars
  • Demon’s Souls
  • Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
  • Sackboy: A Big Adventure
  • Horizon Forbidden West
  • Resident Evil Village

Recently, PlayStation has shared an official teardown of the next-gen console, which gives us a good look of it in person, as well as the many other cool details, like how the mandatory stand works and how big the fan is.
