Ubisoft has announced a new free-to-play hero shooter of sorts, based on the Tom Clancy universe. Tom Clancy’s XDefiant mashes up the various Tom Clancy’s games in a 6-v-6 FPS with abilities and ults. And instead of the usual tacti-cool aesthetic, there’s some colourful punk look instead.
Development is led by the team at San Francisco, with Mark Rubin as Executive Producer. Rubin previously worked at Infinity Ward, which saw him contributing to Call Of Duty 2 up to Call Of Duty Ghosts.
Characters, your “Defiants”, are based on multiple factions all derived from a Tom Clancy’s IP. The Wolves (tanks) are based on Ghost Recon. The Cleaners (assault) and Outcasts (healers) are two factions from The Division. And The Echelon (support) are from, yes, from Splinter Cell. As always, no new Splinter Cell game but it still crops up in other titles now and then.
Your Defiants are also fully customisable, with different looks and loadouts. And more Defiants from other Tom Clancy games, or other IPs, will be added in the future.
While the game has abilities and ults like a hero shooter, the emphasis is still on shooting guns, with loadout customisation and attachments to equip on your primary and secondary weapons.
Players will be battling on familiar-feeling maps (such as the post-pandemic New York from The Division) in game modes like Team Deathmatch, Domination and Escort.
The first test for XDefiant will be on August 5 but limited to PC players in the US and Canada. More tests are coming later this year.
Tom Clancy’s XDefiant will be coming to PS4, PS5, PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Stadia and Amazon Luna.
