Microsoft is indeed lacking exclusive titles to bring more players on the Xbox One. Compare what Xbox One has to offer this year to what PS4 is lining up, it’s a stark difference. And it does not help that they have cancelled a few exclusives themselves.
As part of an analysis report by Polygon about the situation, they claim that Microsoft is currently in the market for another big acquisition. And as described by them, some of the companies that can possibly be acquired are “astounding, even unthinkable.”
PUBG Corp., part of Bluehole, the developers of PUBG, is one of the targets mentioned. The game is now on Xbox One as a timed exclusive, and if acquired, can help keep the hottest game right now an Xbox One console exclusive.
The more unlikely targets are EA and Valve. EA may be in a bad position right now, but the company has traditionally been a multi-platform publisher. Though Microsoft’s recent acquisition of Mojang and Minecraft proved that they don’t mind making their games available on other platforms.
Valve, a privately owned company, is even more unlikely to join- Gabe Newell has never been a fan of the direction of Windows is going. Plus Steam is still the main PC games destination that could be affected with this purchase as Microsoft is still struggling to get more people using Windows Store for PC games.
Whether any of companies will be bought or not, the main discussion remains true: Microsoft needs to compete in the software side with exclusive games on the Xbox One. Launching the Xbox One X, the “most powerful console” is not enough if there’s no interesting games to make use of it.
