In a surprise move, Rockstar Games has announced the acquisition of Cfx.re. This is the team behind FiveM for GTA V and RedM for Red Dead Redemption 2 custom roleplay servers.
Here’s Rockstar’s statement on them acquiring Cfx.re:
“Over the past few years, we’ve watched with excitement as Rockstar’s creative community have found new ways to expand the possibilities of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2, particularly through the creation of dedicated roleplay servers. As a way to further support those efforts, we recently expanded our policy on mods to officially include those made by the roleplay creative community.
“By partnering with the Cfx.re team, we will help them find new ways to support this incredible community and improve the services they provide to their developers and players.”
The Cfx.re team also posted the news, saying that “while our day-to-day operations won’t have any noticeable changes, with Rockstar’s support, we are going to continue to improve our platform and we are truly excited for what this means for our users, community, and creators!”. As well as saying to not ask them about the next Grand Theft Auto game.
FiveM and RedM are essentially modded GTA Online and Red Dead Online servers, only available on PC, running separately from the main game. It allows for custom mods and is mostly used as a platform for roleplay communities. The mods don’t use any of Rockstar’s own servers, which means it’s not going against Rockstar’s terms of service and won’t get you banned in GTA Online or Red Dead Online.
Rockstar scooping up the Cfx.re team sounds like validation and acknowledgement of its thriving modding and roleplaying scene. Whether this translates to even bigger things to come remains to be seen.
At the very least, it now makes both FiveM and RedM are getting official support from Rockstar to keep doing what they’re doing.
