Rocket League, the sportsball with cars game (or “soccar”) is going to be free-to-play soon. Just in time for its 5-year anniversary.
The move will let anyone try out and play the game in full. Owners of Rocket League who bought the game before it goes free-to-play will receive Legacy status which includes the following cosmetic perks:
- All Rocket League-branded DLC released before free to play
- “Est. 20XX” title that displays the first year you played Rocket League
- 200+ Common items upgraded to “Legacy” quality
- Golden Cosmos Boost
- Dieci-Oro Wheels
- Huntress Player Banner
All unlocks will remain. Rocket League will also add cross-platform progression (cross-save) so you can carry over all your unlocks and progress across all platforms. This is on top of cross-platform play (cross-play) where anyone can play together on PS4, PC, Xbox One and Switch.
There is one catch: for PC, Rocket League will launch the free-to-play version only on Epic Games Store. Owners on Steam will still get all updates, but if you don’t buy it on Steam now, you’ll have to use the Epic Games Launcher. Not a surprise since developers Psyonix is owned by Epic now.
No exact date has been given when Rocket League goes free-to-play. But expect it to happen before the summer ends in August.
