Koei Tecmo’s latest financial results report for the last fiscal year revealed some sales numbers for the publisher’s recent crop of games, from April 2023 to April 2024.
One of the most fascinating details from the report is that Rise Of The Ronin, the recently release open-world RPG, has sold more than the entirety of the Nioh series- that’s Nioh and Nioh 2 included.
The report doesn’t specify exact numbers, but developer Team Ninja revealed in 2022 that sales of the two Nioh games altogether has pass 7 million units.
Rise Of The Ronin was released in March 22, so barely just a month in at the time of writing. And it’s already beating the total sales of a six-year-old series.
The report also summarise the critical reception of the Rise Of The Ronin to investors, where it makes note of “novelty as an open world” and “quality of graphics” as “challenge points”. These two are certainly big issues various reviews, including ours, have highlighted, so it’s good to know that the higher-ups at Koei Tecmo know this.
Of all the game sales from financial year 2023 with numbers, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is the top seller, with over 5 million players. That’s players, not copies, as the numbers include players who play the game via Xbox and PC Game Pass. It’s a sharp contrast to Koei Tecmo’s other games which are all selling under 500,000 units.
The financial report also revealed that Koei Tecmo is doubling down on AAA games, with the establishment of a “AAA Studio” group consists of Team Ninja and Omega Force (the devs behind Wild Hearts and the many Musou games).
