Anthem, Bioware’s latest IP and latest unfortunate release, is reportedly still being worked on. Kotaku is reporting that a major overhaul, with it being referred to as “Anthem 2.0” and “Anthem Next” by their sources.
There is not a lot of concrete detail on the report. We know that Bioware are making fundamental changes to the whole game. The quests, social aspects, progression system, world map, and most importantly, the loot, are all being features that are being tinkered. Even the main gameplay loop of going back to your hub base after each mission may be changed.
Details on how these changes are added are also murky. Will it be released over time for free, released as a major expansion, or as a straight-up new release has yet to be decided.
The game is fundamentally flawed, as you can see from the list of things being worked on. But there is a fun looter-shooter in there somewhere based on the demo impressions we had way back before it was released.
EA games don’t have a good history of improving a very troubled game over time. Need For Speed 2015’s free update did add a lot more features but the game’s fundamental issue was not fixed until Need For Speed Heat arrived four years later, for example.
Still, this is the one positive story of Anthem. And if it is indeed being worked on still, it needs all the positive news it can get.
