With PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) reaching a whopping 5 million of sales despite being only available on PC currently and in Early Access speaks volumes of the success of this new genre of game, dubbed Battle Royale.
Paying homage to the movie (and manga) of the same name, new sets of cosmetics inspired by Battle Royale are now being rolled out. The new cosmetics will be available as part of an experimental loot box system, which PlayerUnkown explained in their latest patch notes here.
Essentially, there are three different boxes- one being tied to the Gamescom PUBG Invitational. This is the first official LAN tournament for the game, with the sales from the Gamescom Invitational box goes to fund the event, the prize pool and also to support several charities. The current rize pool is at $350,000 USD.
The Gamescom PUBG Invitational, jointly organised with ESL, will feature 80 players- a majority of them will be content creators, influencers as well as the top players of the game. There will also be qualifiers for attendees of Gamescom to have a chance at joining the Invitational as well. Four different game modes will be played- Solo Mode, Duo Mode, Duo FPP (first-person perspective) and Squad Mode.
Gamescom, the annual gaming convention that is open to the general public, will be held from 22 to 26 August at Cologne, Germany.
