It’s a wild ride for Housemarque, the indie devs known for arcade shooters. They abandoned their niche, tried to make a battle royale, abandoned that to make arcade shooters again exclusive to PlayStation.
This new trailer for their upcoming PS5 game Returnal highlights what kind of weaponry you will have at your disposal.
You will play as Selene who found herself stranded in the alien planet Atropos. She will be using guns she has brought with her, as well as a variety of alien weaponry found on the planet. Each weapon has alt-fire as well.
There’s also a loot system. Weapons can gain modifiers called Weapon Traits that’ll augment how it shoots. These modifiers can stack too. However, some loots can come with a disadvantage- called Parasites.
There will be 10 base weapons (with 10 different alt-fires), and more than 90 Weapon Traits to mix and match to fit your playstyle in this third-person shooter.
Returnal is also a rougelite, where every death has you start back fresh, but you’ll retain some progression. The Cthonos is an alien device that will drop you a random item at each new run. And as you progress further, more items will be added to the pool of random drops from this device.
It you’re itching for an arcade shooter with a spooky sci-fi tone (and you managed to get the rare drop that is a PS5), Returnal should be something you should check out. It will be available on March 19.
