PlayStation has revealed a refreshed PS5 model, releasing later this year just in time for the holiday season.
This mid-generation refresh for the PS5 sees the monolithic console getting 30% smaller in volume and weighs 18% and 24% less (from 3.9kg to 3.2kg for the PS5 and 3.4kg to 2.6kg PS5 Digital Edition- the one without a disc drive).

Should you decide to get a PS5 Digital Edition, you are not hard-locked into only playing digital games with this PS5. The PS5 Digital Edition now has an Ultra Blu-ray Disc Drive you can purchase separately and install. Whether that includes a new cover piece with the hump to fit a disc drive is unknown at the moment.
And it looks like the PS5, with the disc drive, can also come off should you, for some reason, wanted to detach the drive for a cleaner look of the slimmed console.
The new PS5 refresh also has a change in how the external covers work. Instead of two panels, these are now split into four, with the top bits having a glossy (shiny) finish while the bottom remains matte.
This also means that all those customisable plastic covers released before this, like the Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 one, will not be compatible with this version of the PS5.
Specs-wise, this is packing the same power as the launch PS5, with one exception. The internal storage is now at 1TB rather than the odd 825GB the original settled for.
Speaking of odd, the new redesign means that the really cool stand that can be used for placing the console vertically and horizontally has been replaced with only a horizontal stand. The vertical stand, as seen in the promo pictures here, oddly, is a separate purchase.
If you haven’t got your hands on a PS5 yet, understandably so since the first three years of this console generation was plagued with supply chain issues, well, good news. This new PS5, slimmer than the previous one, will go on sale in November this year.
