New Civilization Game Confirmed In The Works As Major Leadership Changes Hit Firaxis

2K announced some major changes to the leadership at its studio Firaxis Games, and also confirmed the next Civilization game is in the works.

No official title for the next Civ game is given yet (right now we just have to assume it’s Civilization VII). Ed Beach, creative director on Civ VI, will continue to reprise his role for the next Civ game.

The historical 4X strategy game continues to be popular, and as a series has sold more than 65 million copies to-date.

While Civ seems to be seeing familiar faces, the rest of Firaxis has some major shake-ups as veterans of the studio leaving. Jake Solomon, creative director on the XCOM series (without the dash) and more recently on Marvel’s Midnight Suns, has left Firaxis.

“I’m embarking on a new chapter; however, I am incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to fulfill my dreams at Firaxis Games,” said Solomon. “I’m thankful to everyone who enjoyed XCOM and Marvel’s Midnight Suns, and to my development and publishing partners who helped bring those games to life.”

Firaxis’ long-time studio head Steve Martin has also left the studio after working there for more than 25 years. In his place, Friaxis COO Heather Hazen has been promoted to Studio Head.

Hazen joined Firaxis in 2020 and has 22 years of experience in the industry with roles including Executive Producer on Fortnite at Epic Games and as well on Plants VS Zombies and Bejeweled at PopCap Games.

“I’m thrilled to have this opportunity to carry on the studio’s storied legacy, beginning with the announcement that Firaxis is in development on the next iteration of the legendary Civilization franchise,” said Hazen. “I’m lucky to be working with some of the best developers in our industry, and we have plans to take the Civilization franchise to exciting new heights for our millions of players around the world.  In addition, we will continue to support Marvel’s Midnight Suns with post-launch content, and explore new creative projects for our teams.”

Civilization VI and Marvel’s Midnight Suns continue to be getting new content post-launch.

We shall see where this “new era” of Firaxis Games, as 2K describes it, will lead them too. Firaxis is one the most prominent developers in the strategy game space, and with the recent Midnight Suns, has now even dabbled a bit in making RPGs. But for now, we can be assured that another Civ game is coming.
