A demo will be available for those that pre-ordered Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 remaster/faithful remake tomorrow. And you will be noticing a new grab trick name when you button mash your way around the Warehouse demo.
The Weddle Grab is the new name for the trick formerly known as the mute grab, or mute air. Tony Hawk, over on Instagram, explains the name change.
“Around 1981, a deaf skater and Colton skatepark local named Chris Weddle was a prominent amateur on the competition circuit. The ‘Indy’ air had just been created & named so somebody proposed that grabbing with the front hand should be known as the ‘Tracker’ air.
“Others countered that Chris was the first to do, so it should be named after him. They referred to him as the ‘quiet, mute guy.’ So it became known as the mute air, and we all went along with it in our naive youth.
Hawk says that a different name should be given to Chris Weddle, who is hearing-impaired, not lacking speech. He has reached out to Weedle about renaming the trick, and Weddle agreed on the name change.
The Weddle grab is not the only re-christened trick to appear in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2. As revealed on the Activision Blog, two more tricks credited to Weddle will also see a name change: the Weddle Backflip and the Reacharound Invert.
“With the launch of the remaster, Vicarious Visions was happy to celebrate Chris’ legacy with the renames and hope fans enjoy these tricks, and dozens upon dozens more, in this demo and in the full game,” the post reads.
Given the origin story of the mute grab, it’s amazing to see Tony Hawk championing for change. To put it on the new Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, the game-changing game that put skating culture on the map, means a lot.
The Warehouse demo for Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 is only available for pre-orders of the game, and unlocks on August 14. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 releases on September 4 for the PS4, PC (Epic Games Store) and Xbox One.
