Marvel Rival’s Season 2 drops a new support hero who isn’t exactly fighting for the greater good, and that “Hero” is Ultron.
And coming from someone who has never played this game much until now, playing Ultron is a breath of fresh air from other shooters in their genre.
The ability to take flight, have healing drones, and even do long-range damage, pretty much redefines my expectations of a Support hero, and that’s speaking as a long-time Support player.
So here’s all you need to know about them!
So Who is Ultron Anyway
In their comic origin, dating back to 1968, and even in Marvel Rivals, Ultron is a self-aware AI within a robotic body that holds a grudge against his creator, Doctor Hank Pym. Ultron believes that the only way to maintain peace as a peacekeeping android is to annihilate humanity.
This is mostly the same for its Marvel Cinematic Universe variant, this time being created by Tony Stark and Bruce Banner instead. And for this season of the game, Ultron’s story brings him to this universe to have a chance to see his maker after his conquest run, with the help of X-Tron, who’s essentially a higher version of themselves.
Ultron is a pretty good antagonist character for this season and it is quite recognizable since their previous appearance was in the Disney Plus shows like “Marvel’s What If” and, even his previous game appearance was back in Marvel Ultimate Alliance from 2007, so its inclusion is quite welcome.
How Ultron Plays in Marvel Rivals
Ultron is a long-range support character, with the ability to fly continuously in any location that could evade attacks and make themselves a nuisance to counter for on-the-ground Heroes.
Their main attack, the Encephalo-Ray, can not only do damage, but every 2nd attack heals your teammates in the same general direction, like how Lucio from Overwatch is with their dual attack/healing combo.
There’s also Rage of Ultron, where players deploy drones that could also fire Rays that can attack enemies or heal teammates depending on where their placement is, which doesn’t care if your placement is during flight or between the heroes, as long as a surface is there.
Ultron’s Dynamic Flight is similar to Iron Man’s flying controls, but instead of a continuous straight boost, it is similar to a dodge roll in Dark Souls, which could be instrumental in cases where the enemy Hawkeye or Black Widow plans to snipe you.
Ultron also has a barrier healing shield, in the form of the Impenetrative Firewall. This shield boosts the health of Ultron and its allies using a rectangular drone that covers a wide area, making it particularly useful when escorting a payload against approaching enemies
Their Team-Up Ability is an upgrade to their main attack by Iron Man, their only current available team-up, to become Nano Ray, which then fires an “unstoppable” Ray straight ahead that pierces through all characters, delivering massive damage to enemies while simultaneously restoring health to allies. It’s a pretty good way to turn the tides during any encounter.
If you think Ultron’s abilities are pretty cool, you could also get their X-Tron bundle in the Marvel Rivals Store for 1600 Lattices, which are available to purchase at SEAGM!
Any Counters?![How to play Ultron Marvel Rivals]()
For now, there isn’t a definitive answer for this, since player skills and character usage aren’t that big during this point of the season. But from my multiple play sessions as the evil automaton, I reckon a good Iron Man could counter Ultron fairly well since both of them are air-based heroes.
Ultron doesn’t have that much health (hence the Healing Drones), so a pretty good Punisher or even one twist of Hela’s Team Up Ability could just unravel Ultron quickly, not to mention that it flying too close to the ground could lead to encounters like getting trapped by Jeff or the Scarlet Witch. And that’s speaking on experience.
What Do I Think Of Ultron
As someone who has hundreds of hours in that other game series, coming to Marvel Rivals via Ultron is quite of a journey that’s like rediscovering an old restaurant that you used to frequently visit, now taken under a new management and somehow still feels like that old place with the taste and experience just the same.
Heck, as a mostly support and DPS player all my life in Overwatch, seeing all of the shenanigans that had occurred throughout my game time with Ultron does feel like something both familiar and different, in how they play out within a match.
The dynamics of the team are mighty important, how its objectives and even the characters that we have picked are more vital now than other games, that invoke a sense of teamwork that can win games. And Ultron just reminds me of my time as a Lucio main, all too well.
Verdict ![Ultron X-Tron Skin Bundle]()
Ultron is Netease’s answer for a supporting character that dishes out attacks while also protecting with his pretty good heals, which perhaps could decide a game from winning or losing. A fascinating introduction that negates the complaints that “Support characters don’t do much”, and to do it with a villain that despises humans, is a funny coincidence as well. In short, Support is back in a big way.
