Ion Maiden Is Not Just A Throwback To 90’s FPS, It Is Built On a 90’s FPS Engine

In the age where we can make games like how it was made in the 90’s because of nostalgia, some games missed out the mark. So now we have a game not only made to like a game from the 90’s, but using the same tech from the 90’s.

That is what 3D Realms are claiming for their latest FPS, Ion Maiden. The creators of Duke Nukem and the original Shadow Warrior are using the Built Engine famous for such titles with this new game. And it certainly look and feel like a 90’s FPS.

Interestingly, the main character is Shelly which debuted in 3D Realms’ first post-Duke Nukem IP, Bombshell. It did not pan well, being just a another twin-stick shooter. But with the old-school FPS design being far more different than modern affairs, and not many have nailed down exactly why those games work so well, Ion Maiden has the position to prove its mettle.

(Also: what a cheeky name. It being one-letter off from the famous British heavy metal is clearly intentional. Just look at the logo font.)

It is now on PC via Steam Early Access.
