Insomniac Games Now Acquired By Sony

Insomniac Games, most famous for series so ubiquitous to the Playstation consoles such as Spyro The Dragon, Ratchet And Clank, Resistance and most recently, Marvel’s Spider-Man, is now part of the Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Worldwide Studios. In other words, a first-party developer for Sony.

It’s shocking, not that Insomniac is joining Sony, but rather Insomniac is only now joining Sony. The developers were pretty much on par with Naughty Dog back in the early 2000’s. Naughty Dog is one of the more successful Sony first-party studio.

“It feels more like a homecoming though,” Insomniac’s CEO Ted Price wrote on their website about the story. “We’ve collaborated with Sony for more than 20 years — spanning all four PlayStation consoles, 20 total games and six franchises. We still work closely today with many of the same Sony teammates as we did when we released the original Spyro the Dragon in 1998.”

Insomniac’s other ventures outside of working with Sony has been here-and-there. No one remembers that one game they made with EA. Sunset Overdrive, which was an Xbox One launch title, was decent- especially now that it’s also on PC. Insomniac also dabbled with VR games made for Oculus.

But everyone remembered Spider-Man. That went on to sell millions.

Sony continuing to bolster its first-party developer line-up is a nice move, and Insomniac has always thrived on their platform so it’s win-win for everyone here.
