Ahead of Helldivers 2’s imminent launch on Xbox, there will be a new Legendary Warbond (battle pass) for the multiplayer co-op shooter. And it features the perfect crossover to mark the occasion of PlayStation Studios’ first release on Xbox.
The Helldivers 2 X Halo ODST Legendary Warbond, releasing the same day as Helldivers 2 on Xbox, will see the Helldivers and Helljumpers together as one. The new trailer for this new DLC is a straight-up homage to Halo 3: ODST, the spin-off game to Halo where instead of becoming John-117 Halo himself a.k.a. Master Chief, you play as a grunt as part of the Orbital Drop Shock Trooper.
However, this is still the Universe of Super Earth and these are still Helldivers, not Helljumpers. They’re not the Orbital Drop Shock Trooper, but the “Obedient Democracy Support Troopers,” as per Xbox Newswire. So in-world, these are just nice homages rather than a Fortnite-style crossover. They new armour set just so happens to look like the ones from Halo 3: ODST, but with capes.
The Legendary Warbond included the following familiar weapons and armour pieces:
- MA5C Assault Rifle
- M7S SMG
- M90A Shotgun
- M6C/SOCOM Pistol
- A-9 Helljumper Armour
- A-35 Recon Armour
In Helldivers 2, Warbonds are more or less battle passes. Premium Warbonds, the ones that have been added throughout the course of the game’s life and require a micro-transaction purchase (Super Credits) to unlock. However, unlike usual battle passes in live service games, Warbonds in Helldivers 2 never expire, and you can take your time to collect the required XP to unlock all the rewards within it.
Note that the Helldivers 2 X Halo 3: ODST warbond is classified as a Legendary Warbond, and can’t be claimed using Premium Warbond Tokens.
It was previously reported that a development team at Microsoft pitched a live service game based on Halo ODST, which would ended up similar to Helldivers 2. The project never got the greenlit, and Xbox missed out on one of the biggest and most successful live service games of 2024. Helldivers 2 was certainly PlayStation’s biggest live service game, a stark contrast to its other multiplayer game that ended in a tremendous flop.
With PlayStation now also playing Xbox’s game of launching their 1st-party titles on rival consoles, having this crossover just makes a lot of sense. It’s nice way to mark the occasion of this PlayStation-Xbox crossover. And Xbox gets something Halo-related. It will be while until the rechristened Halo Studios start to make new Halo games again.
Helldivers 2 launches on Xbox Series X|S on August 26, with cross-play between PS5 and PC. Check out our review of the game as it was back on launch here.
