Half-Life Alyx Is A VR Prequel To Half-Life 2, Coming Out In March

As rumoured and confirmed, Half-Life Alyx is the new Half-Life game by Valve. It’s not Half-Life 3, and it’s VR only, but it looks promising.

The new trailer just dropped, showcasing a bit of gameplay and backstory. You play as Alyx Vance in the events leading to Half-Life 2. This involves the start of the resistance of the alien ruler Combine as she rescues her father Eli. That means the protagonist speaks now too.

Valve is billing Half-Life: Alyx as “a full-length game built from the ground up for virtual reality”. Geoff Keighly, who runs The Game Awards these days and has made multiple documentaries about Half-Life (with one for Half-Life: Alyx coming soon), said he took more than 15 hours to finish it.

In the trailer, you get to see some of the cool, VR-only things you can do. From rummaging a shelf to pick up one bullet and methodically load it in the chamber, to using the healing station on one hand while peeking around it to shoot with the other. The UI is all laid out on Alyx’s gloves too.

Half-Life: Alyx also support multiple ways of play in VR. You can have a roomscale setup, or play just by standing or sitting. All forms of VR locomotion are supported- teleport (fade from point A to point B), shift (teleport without the fade out) or move with an analog stick. Hand movement supports finger tracking, something like Valve’s own Index has, or normal triggers.

Half-Life Alyx is running on SteamVR, with support for numerous VR headsets which includes the Valve Index, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Oculus Quest (with PC and link cable) and Windows Mixed Reality headsets. If you own the Valve Index, even just the controller, at any point in time, you’ll get this game for free- it will just be added to your Steam library.

This sounds like the killer-app that VR need for a long while. Not to say there are not many cool games, but having the Half-Life name again lends a big weight to it. Not to mention the length they went to support various VR play setup and scenarios.

Half-Life: Alyx will be out on March 2020 on PC via Steam. It’s a full-priced game, but thanks to Steam’s regional pricing, that translates to RM95 in Malaysia.
