Grand Theft Auto VI is delayed to 2026. Previously set to release sometime later this fall, publisher and developer Rockstar Games have announced a delay and also a firm release date.
The game’s now set to release on May 26, 2026.
“With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception,” the statement announcing the delay reads. “We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”
For the longest time, upcoming game releases in 2025 was too shy to announce a release date if it’s coming in the September-October window, likely to avoid clashing dates with GTA VI.
It looks like games like Ghost Of Yōtei, Marathon and (the recently reverse-delayed) Borderlands 4 can breathe easy. The latter is interesting as that was one of the first games to shoot first, as in locking a date on a September release date. More interesting as it’s published by 2K Games, which Rockstar share a parent company with, Take-Two Interactive.
The first time GTA VI was revealed to the world, it was leaked early, but showed glimpses of the new take on Vice City, its satire on the city of Miami and its surroundings.
Since then, there has been no news.
With GTA VI stepping aside, more publishers and developers should start announcing release dates for games coming this fall. And we should expect some to get announce by the time the annual Summer Game Fest arrives.
Grand Theft Auto VI is now launching on May 26, 2026 for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
