GTA V For PS5, Xbox Series Coming March 15, Next Grand Theft Auto Officially In Development

Rockstar Games have quietly announced a few things via a single blog post. First is a firm release date on the next-gen version of GTA V (and GTA Online) for PS5 and Xbox Series consoles. The March 2022 window is further dialled down to March 15.

When this arrives, players should expect the following upgrades, and more, when playing on a next-gen console:

  • up to 4K resolution
  • up to 60fps
  • texture and draw distance upgrades
  • HDR options
  • ray-tracing support
  • faster loading times
  • 3D audio
  • platform-specific features (DualSense haptic feedback support)

Current players can transfer their GTA V story mode and GTA Online characters to the new consoles via a one-time migration.

There will also be a new standalone version for GTA Online for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. PS Plus subscribers can pick up this version for free in the first three months of its release.

GTA Online will also see some changes in its next-gen version. For one, if you’re booting GTA V for the first time you can immediately skip the story mode prologue and enter GTA Online. A new tutorial has been added as well. Plus, new GTA Online players get access to the Career Builder, which gives you a headstart by letting you choose one of the four different businesses (Biker, Executive, Nightclub Owner, or Gunrunner) to start with, plus a good chunk of GTA$.

Existing players can restart their character to make use of the Career Builder.

Also, there’s a new shop, Hao’s Special Works auto shop that can be found within LS Car Meet. This allows you to upgrade select vehicles (5 new, 5 existing) for “elite driving performance that takes full advantage of the upgraded power of new console hardware.”

Lastly, Rockstar Games concluded the post with the first official word that they are indeed working on the next Grand Theft Auto game.

Given their previous release, the GTA The Trilogy Definitive Edition was quite the disappointment, hopefully, this new GTA release would fare better. It probably still a long, long ways off until we here more concrete details on the next GTA, but for now, fans can be hopeful that they won’t keep re-releasing GTA V over and over. This is the second next-gen version of GTA V, if you could believe it.
