The Tomb Raider series is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year in 2021. And with that comes a year of celebration, as teased on a video published on the Tomb Raider Twitter:
The video also revealed that developers Crystal Dynamics are already planning for a future Tomb Raider game. Whatever it will be, expect to see it set after the events of the 2013 reboot trilogy (Tomb Raider 2013, Rise Of The Tomb Raider, Shadow Of The Tomb Raider) as well as the classic Tomb Raider games from the PS1 era by Core Design- unifying the two timelines together.
“We envision the future of Tomb Raider in all its forms as unfolding in a time beyond these established adventures, telling stories upon the breadth of Core Design’s and Crystal Dynamics’ games and working to unify these timelines,” said Will Kerslake, game director of the Tomb Raider franchise at Crystal Dynamics.
(There was also a previous reboot trilogy that Crystal D worked on before the reboot trilogy, though that was not specifically referred in the video)
Kerslake asked fans to “be patient as we go through the development process”, acknowledging that the task at hand will not be easy. This isn’t a formal announcement of a new Tomb Raider game, and they won’t be in the near future. But at least we know that Crystal D is currently working on Lara Croft’s next adventure.
Until then, the absence of Tomb Raider games will be filled with other forms of media. A new Tomb Raider Netflix animated series, set after the reboot trilogy is coming soon.
