Another month, another free game from Ubisoft. The free game giveaway in conjuction to thier 30 year anniversary continues and for the month of September, we are getting a rather recent game of the French publisher’s vault: The Crew.
The Crew is Ubi’s answer to a current-gen racing game: by making it open world. The map is the whole United States of America, though not in full scale, but still a sizable amount. You can race cars in 5 different specs each with their own characteristics: Street, Dirt, Performance, Raid and Circuit. There’s some hints of online play: PvP and PvE with up to 3 other friends. There’s also a story mode in there too.
While it didn’t set the world ablaze by how amazing it is, like most recent Ubisoft games, The Crew is actually decent, though a bit mediocre at times. Developers Ivory Towers have been constantly updating the game, adding in features, like Camera Mode, for free and even tweaked some of the cars’ handling model. The game also received a paid expansion last year: Wild Run. It adds more community events, more specs and bikes to the mix. Another expansion is coming soon as well: Calling All Units, which adds the ability to be the cops and take down other racers.
As always, the same caveats applies here. It’s only free on PC, and must be redeemed with a uPlay account. Other than that, it’s as free as it can get. Though the constant reminder of features included in the paid expansions can get bothersome, but that’s another story for another day.
