Final Fantasy XV’s Luminous Engine Will Be Used For Next-Gen Games, New Tech Demo Shows Off Ray Tracing Support

The end of development of Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XV saw the game director Hajima Tabata leaving and the formation of Luminous Productions. This is a new AAA game developer studio specialising in using the namesake Luminous Engine- the game engine that powered Final Fantasy XV.

That Luminous Engine will still be used, and is been confirmed to be at the heart of Luminous Production’s new, unannounced AAA game. At the CEDEC game developer conference, a new tech demo was shown for the engine, now utilising real-time ray tracing. The demo was running on an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti.

The demo, Back Stage, shows a subtle use of the real-time ray tracing tech. You really can’t point out where the ray tracing is at first glance- but it sure does made the scene of a woman putting on a lipstick making more realistic. The soft lighting in the eyes, face plus the reflections in the mirror stands out, in particular.

This is a nice glimpse of what the next generation of consoles, which is coming really soon, will have in store for us. And is also helps Nvidia that more developers are adopting the ray-tracing tech.
