Square Enix has revealed new details for Final Fantasy XVI. The reveal trailer from the PS5 hardware reveal stream shows glimpses of the new world, characters and combat of the next numbered Final Fantasy game.
Now, thanks to the teaser website now launched, we now have new details about the lore, the world, the characters and new terms we will need to get used to.
Here are some of the important terms that have been revealed:
- Valisthea – The world name. Includes several realms such as The Grand Duchy of Rosaria, The Holy Empire of Sanbreque, The Kingdom Of Waloed, The Dhalmekian Republic, The Iron Kingdom and The Crystaline Dominion
- Mothercrystals – Giant crystals where realms are based around. Provide blessings, aether for use in magicks
- Eikons – FFXVI’s version of summons. These creatures resides within a person called Dominant
- Dominant – Person that houses Eikons. Treated as royalty in some nations, and cannot escape their fate of bearing the Eikons.
Alongside that, we also have three character names, all of which appeared in the reveal trailer.
The protagonist (or at least, the main focus character in the trailer) is Clive Rosfield. He’s the firstborn son of the Archduke of Rosaria. He’s a skilled swordsman that was expected to inherit the Eikon Phoenix, but that was passed down to his younger brother- Joshua Rosfield. The last character to be revealed is Jill Warrick, a confidant of the two brothers that grew up alongside them, and a ward of Rosaria.

Interestingly, there’s a lot of nods to Final Fantasy XII in what’s revealed so far. Two realms have similar names from FFXII (Rosaria and Dalmasca), and the use of “magick” as the proper term for magic is also something of note from FFXII. Should FFXVI stick to tradition, this should just be nice callbacks rather than any hints as all mainline Final Fantasy games are separate, stand-alone titles.
Final Fantasy XVI is coming to the PS5.
