Dragon Ball FighterZ Topples Street Fighter V As The Most Popular Game For Evo 2018

The Evolution Championship Series (Evo) is the most prestigious fighting game tournament of the fighting game community (FGC), to the point that pro circuits such as the Capcom Pro Tour for Street Fighter V are awarding the highest tier of points for the champion in the tournament.

Its 2018 edition see eight games sharing the main stage– new entries includes two of Arc System Works’ latest fighting games- Dragon Ball FighterZ and Blazblue Cross Tag Battle. Registration has now closed, and with its closing, comes the announcement of the number of entrants for each tournament.

As expected, the new kid on the block, Dragon Ball FighterZ has toppled Street Fighter V as the most participants at 2530 players. Street Fighter V Arcade Edition will have 2421 world warriors participating, with Tekken 7 in third place receiving 1504 entrants.

Evo has been traditionally been an event that supports Street Fighter, with its latest numbered game always having the most participants.

Interestingly, the split community of Smash for WiiU and Smash Melee has a rather healthy number of participants, with WiiU edging up above Melee this year with 1303 players, exactly one more than Melee.

Here’s the full list of entrants as tweeted by Evo’s Head Honcho, Joey Cuellar:

  1.  Dragon Ball FighterZ – 2530
  2. Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition – 2421
  3. Tekken 7 – 1504
  4. Super Smash Bros. for WiiU – 1303
  5. Super Smash Bros. Melee – 1302
  6. BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle – 1148
  7. Guilty Gear Xrd: Rev 2 – 621
  8. Injustice 2 – 356

UPDATE 22/7/18: Evo’s registration was reopened again shortly due to confusion from many players about the specific time the registration closed. With that, the number of players see some minor changes, though nothing that changes the ranking of most entrants as seen before.

The number is as follows, based on a new tweet from Joey Cuellar:

  1. DragonBall FighterZ – 2575
  2. Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition – 2484
  3. Tekken 7 – 1538
  4. Super Smash Bros. for WiiU – 1354
  5. Super Smash Bros. Melee – 1351
  6. BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle – 1178
  7. Guilty Gear Xrd: Rev 2 – 629
  8. Injustice 2 – 363

Evo 2018 is set to be held at Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas, USA from August 3rd-5th. Outside of the big 8 games, there are various side tournaments that will be held around the location as well. Last year saw many publishers deciding to make some game announcements at the tournament as well so be on the lookout for that too.
