Two classic real-time tactics and strategy game, Commandos 2 and Praetorians, now have HD remasters and they are out now on PC. The two games were developed by Pyro Studios originally, released in 2001 and 2003 respectively.
The two HD remasters now run on Unity, with noticeably improved visuals and also controller support. They will also run at 60fps on consoles, which will drop some time this spring (March-June).
Commandos 2: Men Of Courage, as the original release was called, takes place in World War II. Rather than being soldiers in the front line, you control a squad consists of eight different characters, including a dog, and do covert operations. Rather than issueing orders like in RTS games, you control each character directly. A modern equivalent to this is Shadow Tactics. The Commandos 2 HD Remaster is developed by Yippee! Entertainment.
Praetorians HD Remaster is an RTS, based on Ancient Rome where the empire is fighting a war against Egypt and the Gauls. will also be coming to consoles for the first time. It will include the multiplayer mode, though cross-platform play has been ruled out unfortunately. Torus Games handled the development of HD Remaster.
Interestingly, publishers Kalypso Media have announced that a “next-generation entry” to the Commandos series is in the works through a new in-house development studio. No details are ready to be shared yet, but it looks like these HD remasters are not the last time we see these classics.
Commandos 2 HD Remaster and Praetorians HD Remaster are out now on PC via Steam for RM39 and the Kalypso Store. They will also be coming to PS4 and Xbox One. Commandos 2 HD Remaster will also be released on Switch.
