“You can’t make that up,” developer Sandfall Interactive says in a post as they announce a new sales milestone as of May 27 for their debut title, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. The game launched on April 24.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has now sold more than 3.3 million copies after 33 days of launch. The numerology is strong.

The French-made RPG heavily influenced by JRPGs and character action games have resonated strongly as sales continues to soar, enough that they don’t even bother to report the numbers in terms of players, as the game is also available via a Game Pass subscription.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 isn’t a perfect game, players can’t really work around the reactive turn-based combat system, effectively making it a parry-or-die game. But the wonderfully poignant story, strong cast and performance and not to mention the deep character building potential makes Expedition 33 a stellar RPG. We call it “great art” in our review.

In other news, developer Sandfall Interactive previously shared a picture of the team having a round of good-ass Tekken, with a Tekken 8 mod that turns Expedition 33 characters.

Silver fox Frenchman Victor makes a good stand-in for Renoir, whereas guest character Clive from the Final Fantasy series is most appropriately swapped for Verso. The stars truly aligned for this to happen, but it’s not official. It could, the physical release of Expedition 33 is distributed by Bandai Namco, after all.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is out now on PS5, PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store) and Xbox Series X|S. It’s also available on Game Pass.
