Civilization VII Is Getting Limited-Time Free DLC As Devs Testing No Civ-Switching

Firaxis is still hard at working at post-launch updates for the Civilization VII, and the latest check-in update shared some details what’s to come to the 4X strategy game currently still struggling in the court of opinion.

One of the new features might sway some naysayers, as Firaxis confirms that they are currently “playtesting ways to play as one civ continuously through the ages, allowing you to choose a civilization from any Age and guide them throughout your journey through history.”

In other words, Civ VII is getting civ-switch, a core feature when it was introduced, as an option. This should in turn allow you to stick to one particular civilization from start to finish, similar to how previous games depict civilizations as eternal entities at the hands of the player rather unlike how real civilizations which rise and fall throughout the ages.

Firaxis is also testing out more changes to Legacy Paths and Victories. The addition of Legacy Paths, Age-based objectives that can help you secure true victory later are also a result of Civ VII’s Age-based design, and just like civ-switching, just as unpopular. The previous Update 1.2.2 allowed Legacy Paths to be turned off, but there will be “many new paths your empire can follow while achieving greatness and competing for victory” in the future.

For fans that have been playing Civ VII through this rough age, the next DLC content will be free, sort of. The Tides Of Power Collection, a DLC bundle split into two parts, will be free to claim for a limited time from November 4 until January 5, 2026. This way, only those who have Civ VII, or willing to buy the game at the end of this year, can claim the DLC for free.

Details on how to claim this will only be disclosed on November 4, when the update arrives.

Civilization VII Tides Of Power Collection DLC Drops This November

The Tides Of Power Collection is similar in size compared to previous Collections (paid DLCs): Two new leaders, four new civs plus four additional Wonders. The DLC is themed around naval powers, and as such pirates feature heavily. You get to play as Edward Teach (otherwise known as Blackbeard) and Moroccan privateer Sayyida Al Hurra (yes, there was a Muslim pirate queen, the deep cuts of human history sure is fascinating). The civs are all naval-based too, including the return of the Ottomans plus new civs Iceland, Tonga and… the Republic Of Pirates. They did rule the Bahamas for a time.

Somehow, this Collection is the closest thing we’re getting to a new Sid Meier’s Pirates, which isn’t that close, but it’s still something.

The Tides Of Power Collection DLC will drop alongside the Update 1.3.0 which brings improvements to the naval side of Civ VII with a new Unit, Building, changes to combat and more Ocean Resources.
