Civilization VI on Switch Has A Game-Crashing Bug, Workaround For Now Is To Declare War

Civilization VI on Switch has been reported to have one major bug right now. In the late game, should you are pursuing a cultural, scientific or religious victory, the game will just crash in the last turn before you are declared victorious. Various threads on Reddit have documented the frustrations, which seems to be a very replicable bug.

2K is aware of the issue right now and are working on a fix, but there is a workaround at the moment. As 2K’s customer service representative replied to Reddit user Throwaway489er:

“A discovered known workaround is to declare war on the Civilization that is causing the crash right before you end your turn. This seems to alleviate the crashing in most instances. In order for you to know which Civilization is causing the crash, you’ll have to pay attention to which Civ’s turn it falls onto immediately before the crash happens.

Once discovered, reload the save, declare war on that Civ and hit “Next Turn”. I hope this workaround helped out. If you have any further questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to let us know!”

It’s a bit counter-productive that the only way to win a peaceful game of Civ right now is to declare war, but if it’s your victory lap already it shouldn’t matter. It’s a bug we hope to get fixed soon, but seeing the game go “you didn’t win!” and rage quits itself is hilarious.

Civilization VI is out now on PS4 and Xbox One, with all DLCs and expansions now available on PS4, Xbox One and Switch. So the console versions are now feature-parity with the PC original.
