After years in hiatus, Bungie is now ready to share gameplay of its upcoming new Marathon game, Marathon.
The new game based on the developer’s first-ever IP, now reborn as an extraction shooter, have started teasing things on social media, with cryptic posts that fans have worked out to be an ARG, similar to when this new Marathon game was revealed.
Bungie has also invited members of the media to a press event to preview the game.
But for the rest of us, we should see the first gameplay reveal of Marathon (the new game), on April 12, 10AM PT (April 13, 1 AM Malaysia Time, +8 GMT).
The little teaser shows a footage of a vibrant jungle form some sort of camera feed. We could hear a gunfight, but not exactly see it in shot, only for the camera to be shaken about. What we see later is just a limp body, a dead player presumably, as a robo cat curls up to it and rest. Just the right amount of beautiful, cute and absolutely brutal violence.
And that’s what the tone of this new Marathon games seems to evoke even with its loud aesthetic: beautiful, bold and slightly unhinged in a creepy way.
Marathon’s last official update was last year, a check-in with the team sharing a progress update, though no gameplay footage was shown.
Behind the scenes, Bungie has not been doing well. After the acquisition by PlayStation, the developer had laid off employees as part of the ongoing industry-wide layoffs wave, and its other live-service multiplayer game Destiny has lost momentum after the release of The Final Shape expansion.
Marathon has no release date yet, but it’s coming to PS5, PC and Xbox Series X|S.
