Bungie Revives Marathon As An Extraction Shooter

At the PlayStation Showcase 2023, Bungie announced a new game, with a familiar name.

Called Marathon, this is billed as a sci-fi PVP extraction shooter. Not a PVPVE, just PVP.

The game will support cross-play and cross-save between all platforms.

The Marathon name is a familiar one for folks familiar with the developer’s history. Before Destiny and Halo, Bungie was known for the FPS series Marathon, first released in 1994. The game received two sequels, Marathon 2: Durandal and Marathon Infinity.

The typeface of this new Marathon is new but the way it’s stylised is similar enough to invoke the imagery of the original trilogy. Whether this new game has ties to the original series, or a new separate entry, remains to be seen.

Extraction shooters seem like the current new hotness. Embark Studio’s Arc Raiders recently announced a switch from a co-op shooter to an extraction shooter.

No release date for Marathon is given, but it’s coming to PS5, PC and Xbox Series X|S.
