Astroneer, the indie space-themed survival sandbox game by System Era Softworks, has announced that its game now has 12 million players.
That’s a massive number for an indie game to pull off. Astroneer first launched in 2019 and is now available on PS4, PC (Steam, Microsoft Store), Xbox One and Switch. The game is also still available on Game Pass, which should have contributed to its massive player base number.
Alongside the milestone announcement, System Era is also launching the free Custom Games Update available today on all platforms except the Switch, which will be arriving later this month.
Custom Games allows players to greatly customise what kind of Astroneer experience they wish for them and 3 other players. It’s anything between having all accessibility options to make it a cosy sandbox game, to Hardcore and Permadeath options to test the experienced players. The options even include a specific starting biome, what items you have at the start and more.
Custom Games rules can be shared with a code. So anyone can try out the custom scenarios created by the community.
