AMD Reveals New Radeon RX 5600M and RX 5700M GPUs Coming To Laptops

At CES 2020, AMD revealed that they are bolstering their Radeon graphics card lineup. The main reveal is the new RX 5600 and RX 5600 XT graphics cards for desktop, sitting just in-between the RX 5700XT (for 1440p gaming) and the RX 5500 (for mainstream 1080p gaming). This is the closest rival to Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1660Ti, essentially.

But arguably the more important reveal is that the RX 5600 and the RX 5700 will be getting laptop variants. The Radeon RX 5600M will have 6GB of GDDR6 memory and confirmed to be coming to the Dell G15 SE. Like the desktop variant, this is geared for 1080p gaming on laptops.

The Radeon RX 5700M GPUs will “power the most advanced high-performance gaming laptop PCs”. AMD states that it has up to 7.93 teraflops of power, which is pretty high compared to the 5600M (up to 5.83) and the current most powerful console, the Xbox One X (6).

AMD’s Ryzen CPUs are widely available on various laptop configurations these days, but it’s so rare, especially in Malaysia, to see a Radeon GPU bundled in. And even if there are, it’s not comparable to Nvidia’s offering. The Radeon 5000’s relentless focus on performance for 1080p resolution would be perfect for laptops, and it’s good to see AMD putting more effort into this weak area of theirs.

We shall wait and see if more Radeon-powered gaming laptops will crop up in this part of the world. Stay tuned.
