Onimusha: Way Of The Sword Sold More Than A Million Copies On Launch Day

Onimusha: Way Of The Sword, the new action game from a previously dormant franchise by Capcom, is off to a strong start as the publisher announced it already sold a million copies.

Onimusha: Way Of The Sword released on September 4, and has now sold more than 1 million copies just in the first day of release.

This has made the cumulative sales total of the entire Onimusha series to be over 10 million units

Capcom attributed the strong launch numbers due to a number of factors, in a press release for investors. This include the use of cutting-edge technology, compelling story, beautiful visuals as well as multiple demo releases and hands-on exhibitions.

The demo part is arguably the strongest point, especially since Onimusha as a series has been long dormant, and the fact that Capcom added more content to the demo before launch.

The press release made mention that “Capcom is focusing on re-activating IPs that haven’t had a new title launch recently,” so fans of long-dormant franchises will likely get some love. The next franchise revival that is publicly known is for Mega Man in the form of Mega Man: Dual Override.

In Onimusha: Way Of The Sword, players take on the role of Miyamoto Musashi in a messed-up Edo period Kyoto where it’s being overrun by monsters. Imposed of the power of Oni through the Oni gauntlet, Musashi must use his superhuman strength, and impeccable swordplay skills, to defeat the supernatural forces that are threatening humans, and the world.

Onimusha: Way Of The Sword is out now on PS5, PC (Steam) and Xbox Series X|S. A demo is available. Check out what we thought of the original, pre-updated demo here.
