Indie devs Rice Games have launched Shujinkou on the Epic Games Store, available for PC and Mac.
Initially released in 2025, Shujinkou is a “story-driven dungeon-crawler JRPG.” We’re talking a story campaign spanning 80+ hours, 16 handcrafted labyrinths, 200 quests, and over 180 combat and exploration skills. In other words, that’s an enormous load of content for an RPG, and then some.
But Shujinkou also has an option where you can engage in an optional Japanese language-learning system, which covers beginner lessons up to advanced levels. If you prefer to learn kanji while playing an actual video game rather than go through a gamify language learning lesson, you can do so with Shujinkou.
Take a look at the gameplay breakdown here, where you can see how Shujinkou’s battle system makes use of the Japanese language and a more-standard elemental system.
Since its initial release on PS4, PS5, Steam and Switch, Shujinkou has received more than 20 updates which brings hundreds of bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements, and even new features based on player feedback.
The Epic Games Store version of Shujinkou will include the following features:
- 70 achievements
- 26 leaderboard integrations
- Cloud saves
- Controller support
- Windows and macOS support
The developer is also releasing the Shujinkou Original Soundtrack on Epic Games Store, which is a seven-disc collection of 158 tracks and seven hours of music. The songs come from a mix of genres and influences, covering “classical, rock, metal, jazz, electronic, Japanese and Chinese traditional influences, Middle Eastern-inspired compositions, and more.” To use the same words again, this is an enormous load of music and then some.
Shujinkou will be available on PC and Mac via the Epic Games Store on September 9. The game is out now on PS4, PS5, PC (Steam) and Nintendo Switch.
