The next Virtua Fighter game, officially referred as the New Virtua Fighter Project, now has a name. Revealed at Summer Game Fest 2026, the game that unofficially dubbed Virtua Fighter 6 is now called Virtua Fighter Crossroads, with a wordmark that contrasting colour for the V and I, hinting that this is indeed the sixth mainline entry to Sega’s seminal, and dormant, fighting game series.
The trailer revealed during Summer Game Fest 2026 was not something fighting game fan that expected a fighting game to show. It’s mostly cinematics highlighting the single-player mode, showcasing the city of Villasapara, and ends with a stinger: the reveal of Pai Chan.
Even the trailer jokes about Virtua Fighter’s current reputation as at least one person (and probably a lot of those tuning in to the livestream) didn’t recognise the fame kung fu practitioner, mainstay Virtua Fighter character and guest character in Dead Or Alive 5.
The follow-up dedicated livestream paints a clearer picture of what the team at Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, yes the Like A Dragon developers, aim to do with Virtua Fighter Crossroads.
Virtua Fighter Crossroads will feature a single-player story centered around four new playable characters to the series. The reveal starts off with the new poster boy for Virtua Fighter: Cielo. The story will also feature chapters where you play as another newcomer named Stella and two other still unnamed fighters who all found themselves at Vilasapara, a fictional Southeast Asian town. Players can roam around town and interact with the city, including buying canned drinks from a store. Side quests are available, too.
The story trailer gives a hint of Cielo’s arc, a fighter who decided not to throw a match and now faced the wrath of the Chinese mafia. The full-length story trailer, running more than eight minutes long compared to the truncated SGF 2026 version that clocks under three, had more worldbuilding and character banter. The streets are all charmingly dilapidated, lived in, and full of clutter. Those jumbled up cable wires are distinctively Southeast Asian, so is the report of corruption among politicians in the news.
Battles in Story Mode will feature fights with multiple people, though the game will still present itself in a similar camera style to most fighting games: a side view of the action. Though expect the camera to be swerving to get in position as the player character faces a different opponent from another angle, a fusion of fighting game and action-adventure mechanics.
The narrative team for Virtua Fighter Crossroads has some unexpected talents joining its ranks, which includes David Hayter as Worldbuilding Supervisor (mostly known to gamers as the English voice of Solid Snake, but he’s also a screenwriter for films in the X-Men series and Watchmen), Brad Kane as Lead Writer (As Dusk Falls, Ghost Of Tsushima), Tsuyoshi Furuta (Like A Dragon series, Judgment, Lost Judgment) and Shinji Yamamoto (Persona 5 Royal, Persona 5, Persona 4 Dancing All Night, Persona 3, Shin Megami Tensei IV, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 2).
The Virtua Fighter Crossroads showcase explains the team’s vision for the story mode, with some fighting words.
Producer/Creative Director Riichiro Yamada describes the Virtua Fighter Crossroads as “a blend of genres,” including single-player story and fighting game mechanics, or a “Fighting Adventure” game and a “‘Crossroads-style’ adventure,” in his words. On the game’s narrative, Yamada wanted “to create something different than Like A Dragon,” which the team did by focusing on each fighter’s fighting motivation and background to create a story grounded by realism.
Art Director Ryo Shibasaki mentions realism and innovation as the key concepts behind Virtua Fighter Crossroads, like how the original Virtua Fighter did.
Battle Director Yohsuke Takeda reassures fighting game fans that Virtua Fighter Crossroads is still a fighting game in that “you can turn the game on and immediately start fighting.” There’s also gameplay footage of Virtua Fighter Crossroads as a typical fighting game, complete with an incomplete character select screen. Previously revealed characters can be seen with Cielo and Pai fighting.
Finally, Yamada insisted that Virtua Fighter Crossroads “isn’t a remake or a nostalgia grab. It’s a completely reborn Virtua Fighter.”
Whether the world is ready for fresh new Virtua Fighter that will include an ambitious single-player story mode remains to be seen.
