Capcom has continued to release little tidbits of information about its upcoming fighting game Street Fighter 6. And one of the interesting ones recently is the hard confirmation on when Street Fighter 6 sits chronologically.
In a quote by SF6 game director Takayuki Nakayama, the next entry will be taking place after the events of Street Fighter III, which currently sits as the furthest in the Street Fighter timeline.
The timeline of events in the Street Fighter series as it is starts from Street Fighter 1, then the Street Fighter Alpha series, Street Fighter II, Street Fighter IV, Street Fighter V, Street Fighter III and Street Fighter 6.
The quote by Nakayama also revealed why the now-old and grizzled Ryu brandishes a robe to partly cover his current topless getup:
“Although Street Fighter 6 occurs after the Street Fighter III series, Ryu still feels that he’s “not there yet” – though he seems to have gained some dignity. The way he wears the kasaya (Buddhist robe) is reminiscent of his master, Goken.”
Street Fighter 6 so far has officially revealed four playable characters: returning fighters Ryu and Chun-Li and newcomers Luke (who technically have made an appearance as SFV’s last DLC character) and Jamie.
With its place in the timeline, and what the leaks (which Capcom has acknowledged to be somewhat credible) have been suggesting, expect any returning fighters to have aged and more new faces to join the roster.
Street Fighter 6 is expected to release sometime in 2023 for the PS4, PS5, PC as well as Xbox Series X|S.
