It’s been a year since the full launch of Tokyo Xtreme Racer (2025), the return of the long-dormant series of highway battle racing.
Developer Genki, in a social post accredited to an unnamed Tokyo Xtreme Racer producer, has confirmed that there’s more content to come including paid DLC.
“Our goal is to deliver new content that will give everyone who has enjoyed the game even more to look forward to,” the letter reads.
More details on what exactly the paid DLC entails will be revealed at a later date.
On top of that, Genki confirmed that more guest Rivals and collaborations are coming still. The developer has been engaging with various communities with the inclusion of VTubers and other guests as free DLC.
However, Genki isn’t comitting in bringing Tokyo Xtreme Racer (2025) to other platforms at the moment.
Tokyo Xtreme Racer (2025) is a revival of a dormant racing game series known under various names for its English localisation, and is called Shutoku Battle in Japanese. Players take on head-to-head racers on the real highways of Tokyo where racers must outrun each other in what’s dubbed SP Battles. Not only must they outrun the opponent, but also keep the racing clean, as the battle is expressed in health bars akin to fighting games.
While other racing games have incorporated some form of head-to-head outrunning mechanics, no game does it like the Tokyo Xtreme Racer series does.
Tokyo Xtreme Racer (2025) is technically a continuation of the previous games’ plotline, despite the name implying a reboot. A whole new generation of racers have joined in the scene since the last game, though some of the legendary rivals of past games still make an appearance, as they do. In other words, it’s actually a legacy sequel that honours the past but makes room for a new generation of racing fans to discover this overlooked racing game series.
