Overwatch League Expected To Be Profitable Next Year, More Teams Coming In Season 2

The big money is paying off


The Overwatch League is an ambitious venture in the realm of esports. Blizzard aimed to bring in a stable structure seen in traditional sports into esports, and it seems to be paying off.

In the recent quarterly earnings call, Blizzard is expecting the OWL to be profitable by 2018, after a year of operation.

Plus, Blizzard are eyeing in more expansion teams to join the league. Right now the OWL has 12 teams representing a city from across the globe. It is expected that expansion teams will have to pay even more to enter than the current teams’s first paid for, which reportedly worth $20 million USD.

OWL is about to wrap up its first Stage of the first season, which will culminate with a playoffs and bonus prize money. One season of OWL consists of four stages, each with five weeks of matches, and ends on a Championship playoffs sometime in July.
